If it's your first visit to the beautiful harbour side city of Sydney, you will of course want to make sure that you visit the Opera House and Circular Quay, walk across the Harbour Bridge, see the city from the top of Sydney Tower and stroll the beach suburbs of Bondi and Manly. But if you have more time or have visited before, it's often the cheap, fun and unique experiences that are the ones you'll be raving about to all your friends when you return home.
I didn't have to pay a cent!
For a breathtaking view, try the coastal walk from Bondi to Coogee along 6 kilometres of the ocean view coastline. It's a fun and free experience that treks along Sydney's spectacular beaches. Watch the swirl of the sea and don't forget to pack your binoculars. If you're there at the right time, you may see a whale on the horizon! And if you happen to be touring during October or early November, check out the free Sculpture by the Sea.
To avoid the crowds at Bondi Beach, consider a visit to the nearby Camp Cove in Woollahra. From the finest of sand to millionaire views of the harbour and city skyline, this intimate beach caters to those who like to swim, snorkel, paddle or kayak.
Based on donations, the barefoot yoga studio in Paddington is technically not free but offers a range of Hatha, Vinyasa and Yin yoga for all levels of ability. The idea of being a donation based studio follows on from the idea that yoga is a technique built around honesty and trust.
Buy your family burgers with fries and drinks or…
For almost the same price, you and your family could take a short ferry trip to visit the history of Sydney on a trip to the largest island in the harbour, Cockatoo Island. It looks like a ghost town now, but take the audio tour and use your imagination to delve into how this world heritage listed former convict prison and later industrial site must once have looked.
Go for a bike ride around Centennial Park. Operating seven days a week, riding a bike is a great way to explore this cycling-friendly park with its allotted safe bike lanes. Catering for a wide range, there is even an designated 'learners cycleway' for beginners.
It cost us less than the price of a restaurant steak!
If you're in the mood for something spooky, experience the Ghostly Encounters tour at the Quarantine Station in Manly. Used for many years as a place to house those that had been infected with plague, smallpox and scarlet fever among other afflictions, the stories of hauntings and paranormal activity you will experience on the station tour will likely leave you shivering!
Feeling extravagant given all the money you've saved on your accommodation?
You've saved so much money, so why not treat yourself and do something you will never forget? Book a kayaking tour of the harbour to explore Sydney in safety with a qualified guide whilst watching the hustle and bustle of the CBD around you or head to Sydney's iconic Luna Park and enjoy a full day of rides with a backdrop of the harbour city for a special experience.
Fancy some high tea? Make a booking at the picturesque Vaucluse House in Sydney or if you feel like travelling a little further, hire a car and visit the recently renovated Hydro Majestic in the Blue Mountains region to warm you up after your walking trek to The Three Sisters. With so much to see and do there, from wandering through the shops at Leura Mall to exploring the Jenolan Caves, take your time to explore the area by making it an overnight trip. There is a range of accommodation available from luxury resorts to friendly bed & breakfasts and backpacker hostels.
